Last Saturday we went to Grandmother Tura's house in Uppsala for a 'spring buffet.' I was mesmerized by the feast of things to eat, it was quite delicious and we were in a delightful food coma for a while. On her own, this 88 year old woman made spinach pie with a flakey crust, potato gratin, the softest monkey bread, a green salad, meatballs and chicken for the meat eaters, pea soup with Sambal! Asparagus and carrots.
But wait, then there was fika after an hour, and that includes freshly brewed coffee, cinnamon rolls, sandwiched butter cookies, ginger cookies, meringues and rhubarb crumble.
AND the most meaningful (as if one can really compare!) is that she gave me a plant I've dreamed of - a Rose Geranium from her own cutting! It has the sweetest rose fragrance and I am the happiest to have it. My mom has one, and so does Erin, and we know why it's special - it even blooms! Tura said it has medicinal properties, which I must research more about. I hope it won't die indoors!!
